What is Migraine?
When almost unbearable headaches occur together with other conditions such as nausea, loss of appetite, sensitivity to noise or light, it is migraine. Compared to ordinary headaches, a migraine attack is accompanied by one or more of these additional evils and the pain is very severe, throbbing and one-sided. Triptans are usually used to treat migraine, as they have a faster effect.
Migraine is the most common neurological disease and about seven percent of the male population and 13 percent of the female population suffer from it, unfortunately mostly since childhood. These intense, pronounced headaches are very stressful for those affected. Fortunately, one no longer has to be completely at the mercy of fate. Migraine is one of the oldest and best-known diseases and the right migraine tablets are targeted, fast and reliable.
Causes of Migraine
Why so many people suffer from migraines is unclear. However, it is known that the disease is genetically predisposed and that certain factors can trigger an attack. Such triggers can be stress, sleep deprivation, irregular lifestyle, skipping a meal, a fast, weather changes, hormonal fluctuations, menstruation, certain beverages, foods, or medications. Many sufferers can limit the number of migraine attacks or predict a seizure early, by correctly identifying the individual triggers. Migraine is an irregularity in the transmission of nerves in the brain. During a migraine attack, the tissue in the blood vessels of the meninges is dilated and inflamed. Since blood is pumped through the sensitive meninges at every heartbeat and the pain is strongly stimulated in the nerve fibres, the headaches are perceived as throbbing, very intense and one-sided.
Different Types of Migraine
There are many different types and special forms of migraine, but essentially one can distinguish between migraine with
- Aura (classical migraine)
- Migraine without aura (simple migraine), which occurs more frequently.
The 4 Stages of a Migraine Attack
A migraine attack can be divided into four phases;
- Prodromes (premonitory phase),
- Aura phase,
- Headache phase
- Recovery phase.
About 30% of migraine sufferers perceive harbingers, so-called prodromes. Typical signs of the precursor phase are fatigue, gastro-intestinal complaints or sensitivity to noise and can occur a few hours or even a few days before the actual migraine. In 10-15% of migraine patients there is a second phase called migraine aura (migraine with aura), in which the affected person usually suffers from sensory disorders 30 to 60 minutes before the attack. Examples of such neurological symptoms are tingling sensation, visual disturbances, speech disturbances, taste disturbances, balance disturbances and even paralysis.
For most people, the migraine attack starts without any harbinger and starts directly in the headache phase. In this case, as already mentioned, it is referred to as a simple migraine or a migraine without aura. The headache phase is the painful migraine attack and usually lasts between four and 72 hours. Typical symptoms of the headache phase are one-sided, very strong throbbing headaches, accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light and sound, which usually increase during physical activity. In the fourth and last phase, the recovery phase, which can last up to 24 hours, the discomfort slowly decreases and those affected are tired and exhausted.
Treatment of Migraine
Classic headache tablets often do not help with a migraine attack because different mechanisms trigger the pain and accompanying symptoms of migraine from other types of headaches. However, there are specially developed drugs for migraine, such as sumatriptan (brand name Imigran). Sumatriptan (Imigran) is a drug from the group of triptans, which alleviates headaches as well as nausea and sensitivity to light. The medicine's active ingredient activates the serotonin receptors and narrows the blood vessels in the brain, which are typically dilated and inflamed during a migraine attack. For this purpose, pain- and inflammation-triggering messenger substances in the brain are stopped. Since sumatriptan (Imigran) has a selective effect, an improvement fortunately occurs quickly and side effects are also very rare.
Sumatriptan (Imigran) is used for the acute treatment of migraine attacks and not as a prevention. Since migraine attacks are caused by certain factors, it is important to find out the triggers to reduce the frequency of attacks. Nevertheless, migraine attacks can occur anytime, anywhere, and without warning. Fortunately, with the right migraine tablets, such unwanted situations can be dealt with quickly and nobody has to live with the worry and fear of the next attack. The brand name for the medication of migraine is Imigran.
