Doxycycline Malaria prophylaxis is a widely-used antibiotic for the treatment of malaria. It is used to combat a wide range of different bacteria, but it is also a partially productive causal prophylactic, making it suitable as malaria prophylactic.Doxycycline is a synthetically derived tetracycline. Tetracyclines are a family of very wide-ranging antibiotics that are enriched with protozoa, including the malaria parasite plasmodium. This means that the drug is very useful in the treatment of the liver stage plasmodium (in combination with some other medicines), which also makes it very effective in preventing malaria. Doxycycline is also very effective in areas with multidrug-resistant falciparum malaria. It has the ability to be absorbed very quickly when taken orally. After ingestion, doxycycline is detectable in the blood within 15-30 minutes. The fact that it is absorbed so quickly contributes to its effectiveness.
Doxycycline is available in many different dosages and concentrations, but 100 mg capsules or tablets are typically prescribed for malaria treatment or prophylaxis. The usual adult dosage for malaria prophylaxis is 100 mg, taken once a day. Treatment should be started one to two days prior to travel, continue during the stay in the malarial region, as well as four full weeks after the travel. Also, the drug must be taken with schizontozide, a fast-acting remedy. The treatment of Plasmodium vivax or Plasmodium ovals also requires primaquine.
The drug can be used to treat children over the age of eight years, too. As prophylaxis, the usual dose for children is 2.2 mg/kg (up to a dose of 100 mg). It should be used with a fast-acting schizontozide. Therapy should begin one to two days prior to the travel to a malarial area zone; continue during the stay in the risky region, as well as four full weeks after the visit.
Clinical studies have shown that the effect of malaria prophylaxis is between 92% and 96% for falciparum infections, and 98% for primary vivax infections. When used correctly, in combination with a fast-acting schizontoxide, the effectiveness of the Doxycycline treatment is 96-100%.
Doxycycline is also among the most widely-used drugs, as there are no limits to its use in the prevention of malaria. There is no sign of impairment if the drug has been used for an extended period. The general experience with Doxycycline is very positive.
The drug is usually very well-tolerated. However, as with all medications, some side effects may occur.
The most common side effects of doxycycline include:
If any of the above or other side effects occur, tell your doctor immediately! Please read the Patient Information Leaflet for detailed information on side effects, contraindications, and drug interactions.
You should tell your doctor about any over-the-counter, prescription, or recreational drugs you are taking, as well as all herbal products and supplements.
The drugs and products that have a weak interaction include:
The drug may also give false results in some laboratory tests, e.g. urine catecholamine level test. Also, it should not be taken by lactating women, pregnant women and children under eight years of age.
