How it works? When your body gets into contact with something harmful like a bacteria or virus, you start to produce antibodies. Each antibody is unique and different. The test detects the antibodies that you are producing when you get infected with HIV, like a pregnancy test. That means the test shows the antibodies that are generated if you have the HIV virus.
It's important to know that antibodies are only generated about 4 weeks after exposure, by 6 weeks it goes up to 95%. However, some people generate these antibodies only 12 weeks after exposure. That’s why it's important not to rely on a negative test result if the possible exposure is less than 3 months ago. This is called the window time.
The test has when done correctly an accuracy of 99.7%, for both results meaning if being HIV negative and positive. The test is CE marked, which means it is easy to use and very accurate.
Please read the leaflet and how to use section in your kit carefully before performing the test. The instructions are also shown in pictures. Also, please note that each test kit is handled a bit different.
In the UK 95% of people diagnosed with HIV acquired it through sexual contact, meanly through anal and vaginal sex. It is possible to get HIV through oral sex, but the chances are much lower. From 110.000 people living in the UK with HIV are around 12.000 undiagnosed. People who are not aware of their HIV status are the source of new infections. That’s why it is so important to get yourself tested.
Sometimes people mix HIV and Aids. People infected with HIV do not have necessary AIDS. That said you can live a long and happy life with HIV without having developed AIDS, but only if you know your status. So, get tested!
If you think you get exposure to HIV in the last 72 hours you should visit immediately a special HIV clinic that might can prescribe you PEP (post-exposure- prophylaxis) that can stop your infection.
If you think you get exposure in the last 4 weeks you should got to your healthcare station and get a blood sample that needs to be send to a laboratory.
Most tests have a build in control line to make sure you did the test correctly. If there are no lines on your test it means you did not perform the test correctly and you must do the test again.
First, don’t panic. You must go to a professional and confirm the test result. Remember as early you get diagnosed as earlier you can start treatment.
