Malarone- What is it?
Malarone is a drug that kills the malaria parasite plasmodium. This parasite can enter into the human bloodstream through the bite of an infected anopheles mosquito. The parasite inhabits body tissues, such as the liver and red blood cells. Also, it proliferates rapidly, causing the red blood cells to burst. Malarone stops its growth and eventually kills the parasite. If the infection is severe, the doctor may prescribe other malaria prophylaxis to complete the treatment and prevent the relapse of the infection in the future.
Duration and dosage
The dosage of the tablets depends on your medical history and health status, as well as on the method of treatment and your response to it. However, if the aim is to prevent the disease, it is usually taken once a day, at the same time, or as directed by your doctor. The treatment should be started one or two days before the visit to the malaria region, and it should be continued during the visit, as well as seven days after leaving the risky area.
To treat malaria, the prescribed dosage must be taken once a day, for three consecutive days, or as prescribed by your doctor. Even if the symptoms are reduced, Malarone should be taken throughout the whole prescribed period.
Last but not least, Malarone tablets should be taken with food or milky drinks containing fat. If you vomit within an hour, you should repeat the intake. If you continue to vomit, contact your doctor as soon as possible. Your doctor may prescribe an extra medication for vomiting or a different malaria drug.
