Pulmicort is a metered-dose asthma inhaler used to treat bronchial asthma, allergic asthma, bronchial carcinoma, pulmonary emphysema, and chronic bronchitis. Budesonide, the main active ingredient found in the product, is a synthetic glucocorticoid, which is a related substance to cortisone. Cortisone itself is a hormone naturally produced by your body. The active ingredient budesonide inhibits the body's own chronic inflammatory reactions and processes. Therefore, this medicine is not only used for respiratory diseases, but also as a drug for the local treatment of non-infectious rhinitis, nasal polyps, inflammatory bowel diseases, and chronic inflammation of the liver as a result of autoimmune hepatitis.
Pulmicort is used for respiratory diseases, such as chronic bronchial asthma. Also, it is used in the case of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), if the doctor previously determines the necessity of glucocorticoids applied by inhalation. Please note that Pulmicort is not suitable for the treatment of an acute asthma attack.
The effect of Pulmicort is anti-inflammatory. Infections and inflammations in the bronchial and respiratory tract subside with regular use, as the substance related to cortisone inhibits the body’s processes which continue to nourish inflammation. In the case of chronic diseases, the inflammations cannot thrive and the swelling of the affected lung membrane subsides.
The recommended dosages for follow-on treatments are:
The maximum dose is two ampoules per day for children up to 12 years of age, and four ampoules per day for children over 12 years of age and adults. The exact duration of the treatment should be discussed with the doctor, as it depends on the degree of inflammation. After using the inhaler, the mouth should be rinsed regularly to avoid oral thrush.
First, shake the asthma spray and then remove the cap. Exhale calmly and widely before spraying and apply it shortly before inhalation. The drug should be inhaled deeply. A maximum of two puffs of the spray should be inhaled per application, in an upright standing or seated position. Please note that the drug must not be used for more than 12 hours after opening or preparation!
Pulmicort is recommended for healthy children and adults who tolerate the active ingredient. On another hand, breast-feeding mothers and pregnant women should discuss taking Pulmicort with their doctor.
Side effects occur rarely and most of the time only in the first weeks of therapy, when your body adjusts to it.
The most common side effects include:
If any of these or other side effects occur, tell your doctor immediately. Read the Patient Information Leaflet for detailed information on side effects, contraindications, and drug interactions.
The following Beta-2 sympathomimetics can lead to a strengthening of the effect but not the side effects of budesonide;
On the other hand, the following drugs strengthen the effect and also the side effects budesonide:
esides, glucocorticoids such as budesonide, promote the excretion of potassium, therefore attention should be paid to the intake of potassium, to rule out deficiency symptoms and secondary diseases. Since budesonide is broken down by the same enzyme as the estrogen hormone, Ethinyl estradiol, combined birth-control pills with estrogen and progestin can enhance the effect of this drug. The mini-pill does not affect Pulmicort.
Before using Pulmicort, tell your doctor if you are taking other drugs, including herbal supplements and vitamins.
