Pulmicort is a metered-dose asthma inhaler used to treat bronchial asthma, allergic asthma, bronchial carcinoma, pulmonary emphysema and chronic bronchitis. Budesonide, the main active ingredient, is a synthetic glucocorticoid which is a related substance to cortisone. Cortisone itself is a hormone produced by the body itself. The active ingredient budesonide, inhibits the body's own chronic inflammatory reactions and processes, and is therefore not only used for respiratory diseases, but also as a drug for the local treatment of non-infectious rhinitis, nasal polyps, inflammatory bowel diseases and chronic inflammation of the liver as a result of autoimmune hepatitis.
For respiratory diseases, such as chronic bronchial asthma. In the case of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), if the doctor in the pulmonary function examination previously determined the necessity of glucocorticoids applied by inhalation.
However, the drug is NOT suitable for treatment of an acute asthma attack.
The effect is anti-inflammatory. Infections and inflammations in the bronchial and respiratory tract subside with regular use, as the substance related to cortisone inhibit the body’s own processes which continue to nourish inflammation. In chronic diseases, the inflammations cannot thrive and the swelling of the affected lung membrane subsides.
At the beginning of treatment, the dose should be adjusted to the following amounts:Children between six months and 12 years: 0.5 – 1 inhalation ampoule, twice a day, morning and evening
Children from 12 years and adults: 1 – 2 inhalation ampoules, twice a day, in the morning and evening
Follow-on treatment:Children between six months – 12 years: 1/4 – 1/2 inhalation ampoule, twice a day, morning and evening
Teenagers 12 years and older and adults: 1/2 – 1 inhalation ampoule, twice a day, morning and evening
The maximum dose is two ampoules per day for children up to 12 years of age, and four ampoules per day for children 12 years of age and older and adults. The exact duration of the treatment should be discussed with the doctor, as it depends on the degree of inflammation. After using the inhaler, the mouth should be rinsed regularly to avoid oral thrush.
Healthy children and adults who tolerate the active ingredient.
Breast-feeding mothers and pregnant women should discuss taking Pulmicort with their doctor.
