The active ingredient salbutamol is used to treat respiratory diseases such as bronchial asthma, chronic bronchitis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or pulmonary emphysema. In addition, the active ingredient can also be used to treat allergic or exertion-related asthma.
Salbutamol is a beta-2 sympathomimetic drug (also called beta-2 adrenergic receptor agonist), which is usually, and most efficiently, inhaled using a spray or inhaler. When the medication is inhaled directly into the lungs, the bronchial system expands immediately, the respiratory muscles relax and breathing is quickly normalized again. Thanks to its immediate effect and minimal side effects, this popular drug, developed in 1969 by the English pharmaceutical company Ivax, has been on the market for almost half a century and is still in demand.
Active substances of the class beta-2 sympathomimetic fulfill the mechanism of a beta-2 adrenergic receptor agonist, imitating the hormones adrenalin and noradrenalin in the bronchial system, by activating the beta-2 adrenergic receptor. In other words, the drug mimics the stress hormones of the lungs, making the bronchial tubes constricted by the disease to expand again and normalize the breathing. The drug is usually administered via an inhaler (asthma spray), therefore, the active ingredient enters the lungs directly and the effect occurs within a few seconds.
In the event of an asthma attack, asthma symptoms or other respiratory problems, the medication should be sprayed or inhaled directly into the lungs via the mouth using a metered-dose inhaler (spray) or a powder inhaler. If written on the product, the spray should be first shaken vigorously. After that, the attachment of the spray or inhaler should be enclosed by the lips. The head is tilted slightly backward so that the active substance reaches the lungs faster and easier and the spray button is pressed simultaneously during the slow inhalation. Then the breath is held for five to ten seconds, the mouthpiece is taken out of the mouth, and the breath is exhaled slowly through the nose. Salbutamol can be used in children from the age of four.
Since the active ingredients in this drug act selectively on the lungs, there are relatively few side effects.
However, the following possible side effects may occur in some cases:
In even rarer cases it can lead to
Also, please note that possible side effects usually occur in the first two weeks of treatment and disappear quickly afterward. A higher dose can also increase the occurrence of side effects. During pregnancy and lactation, the medication may only be used after consultation with a doctor. Salbutamol can inhibit contractions and is sometimes used to reduce early contractions and thus prevent premature birth.
If any of the above or other side effects occur, tell your doctor immediately. Read the Patient Information Leaflet for detailed information on side effects, contraindications, and drug interactions.
Frequently, some medications are not compatible with each other when taken at the same time, because the active ingredients in the drug drive the same or opposite mechanisms in the body.
Salbutamol must not be used in combination with the following medications:
In addition, Salbutamol should not be used together with certain medications for the therapy of:
In case you suffer from high blood pressure, arteriosclerosis, vascular aneurysms, hyperthyroidism, diabetes, potassium deficiency, tumors or certain heart diseases – you should not use Salbutamol without medical advice, even if these health conditions are not treated with medication. In order to reduce the risk of contraindications and interactions, read the package leaflets carefully.
Salbutamol is subject to prescription, as side effects may occur if you use it incorrectly or in combination with other drugs. Fill in a medical questionnaire at Apomeds and request the desired treatment. Your answers will be checked by EU-approved doctors from our team, who will issue an online follow-up prescription if they consider the treatment is safe for you.
