    What is Ventolin?

Ventolin is a metered dose asthma inhaler containing the active ingredient salbutamol. It is used to treat asthma attacks (bronchial asthma, as well as allergic or exertion-related asthma), chronic bronchitis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and other respiratory diseases. The active substance, salbutamol, is a beta-2 sympathomimetic, or a beta-2 adrenoceptor agonist, imitating the adrenaline and noradrenaline uptake of the bronchial system and lungs during a seizure. By inhaling the active ingredient, the respiratory tract constricted by the asthma attack or the respiratory disease is enlarged; while the mucus formation and inflammation are inhibited, and normal breathing is immediately restored.

    How does Ventolin work?

During an asthma attack, the respiratory tract narrows, the mucous membranes swell and breathing becomes extremely difficult. This happens because the immune system of an asthmatic, or a person with a chronic disease of the respiratory tract, overreacts to external stimuli. By inhaling the active substance salbutamol, which, when inhaled slowly, reaches the narrowed and inflammatory region of the respiratory tract via asthma spray, aerosol or inhaler -the active substances in Ventolin imitate the function of the beta-2 adrenergic receptor agonists and activate the stress hormones adrenalin and noradrenalin. This procedure enlarges the lower respiratory tract and the bronchial system, relaxes the respiratory muscles, dissolves the mucus, and oxygen returns to the lungs unhindered, which immediately facilitates breathing.

How to Use the Ventolin Asthma Spray

Ventolin is normally inhaled or sprayed directly through the mouth during an acute seizure or to prevent physical exertion or foreseeable stimuli, via metered-dose inhalers. The package leaflet must be read carefully to ensure correct use and application. First, the product should be shaken vigorously and then the attachment piece is put into the mouth. While inhaling slowly, one or two sprays are pressed; the breath is held for five to ten seconds after inhalation, and finally exhaled through the nose. The number of puffs and the number of applications vary according to the disease and severity. This aspect must be discussed with the doctor. During pregnancy and lactation, the medication should be taken with caution and only after receiving medical advice, as the active ingredient can inhibit contractions and enter breast milk.

    Side Effects

Side effects occur only rarely and often only in the first weeks of therapy, as the drug selectively concentrates on the respiratory tract and lungs.

Nevertheless, it is possible that the following occur:

    • Muscle cramps,
    • Trembling,
    • Headache,
    • Irritations of the mouth and throat,
    • Hand tremors.

In even rarer cases it can lead to

    • Fatigue,
    • Dizziness,
    • Arrhythmia,
    • Allergic reactions,
    • Circulatory problems,
    • Sweating,
    • Stomach and intestinal dysfunction.

If any of these or other side effects occur, tell your doctor immediately. Read the Patient Information Leaflet of the product for detailed information on side effects, contraindications, and drug interactions.

    Contraindications and Interactions

In some cases, the effect of the asthma spray can be reduced or increased by certain medications and should, therefore, be avoided. Beta-blockers, which are mainly used to treat heart conditions, arrhythmia and high blood pressure, when simultaneously used with Ventolin lead to a weakening or even disappearance of the effect, as both drugs act on the same target structure.

Besides, Ventolin should not be combined with:

    • Antidiabetic drugs or other beta-2 sympathomimetic drugs
    • Antiarrhythmic drugs
    • Heart glycosides
    • Parkinson's drugs
    • Antidepressants
    • Oxytocin
    • Ergot alkaloids
    • Procarbazine
    • L-Thyroxine
    • Anesthetic with halogenated anesthetics

In addition, alcohol consumption should be reduced or completely avoided during therapy with Ventolin.

Even if the following diseases are untreated, Ventolin should be taken with caution, as they could alter the effect of the drug:

    • High blood pressure
    • Arteriosclerosis
    • Vascular aneurysms
    • Hyperthyroidism
    • Diabetes
    • Potassium deficiency
    • Tumors or certain heart diseases

Seek medical advice before using Ventolin. Tell your doctor about your health condition, as well as about other medications you are using, including herbal supplements and vitamins.
