What is Xenical?
Xenical is a drug used to combat obesity, manufactured by the pharmaceutical company Roche. The active ingredient in this medication is called Orlistat, a substance that stops the absorption of fat in your body.
How does Xenical work?
Xenical prevents your body from absorbing fat. After you ingest fat from your food, enzymes in your stomach and intestines break it down into various smaller components. Fat can only be absorbed into the bloodstream if it has been broken down into these tiny fragments. These specific enzymes that break down fat are called lipases. Xenical binds to lipase enzymes and prevents their function. As a result, fat gets into the intestine and out of the body without being absorbed into the bloodstream. In this way, you consume fewer calories, lowering your total calorie count. If this level stays below the number of calories your body consumes in a day, you can lose weight.
How to take Xenical?
Take three 120 mg capsules per day, by mouth, with a glass of water. You should take a pill before or no more than an hour after a meal. In case the meal is completely fat-free, you may skip the tablet. There is no added benefit in increasing the dose. You may notice changes in your stool within 24-48 hours of starting treatment.
