Drug class PDE-5 inhibitors

What is Tadalafil?

Tadalafil is the active ingredient found in the erectile dysfunction medicine Cialis. When the patent for Cialis expired, other pharmaceutical companies were permitted to manufacture generic tadalafil. Tadalafil contains the same active ingredient at the same strength as Cialis and therefore provides the same therapeutic effect at a lower cost.

How does Tadalafil work?

Tadalafil belongs to the group of PDE-5 inhibitors, just like Sildenafil, Vardenafil and Avanafil.

Tadalafil inhibits the enzyme PDE-5, so that the messenger substance cGMP remains active in the penis for longer – this keeps the blood vessels dilated, which allows for a stronger and longer-lasting erection during sexual arousal.

Onset of action

Duration of effect

After 30 to 60 minutes

Up to 36 hours

The exceptionally long duration is what distinguishes tadalafil from sildenafil or vardenafil. However, like all ED medicines, tadalafil only works in the presence of sexual stimulation.

How to buy Tadalafil in the UK?

Tadalafil is a prescription medication. This applies to both Cialis and all generic Tadalafil products. To buy tadalafil, consult a doctor who will determine whether the treatment is appropriate and safe.

This also applies if you want to buy Tadalafil online in the UK. Reputable healthcare platforms where you can order Tadalafil online always require a medical consultation before prescribing it.

Buying tadalafil online from non-verified websites increases the risk of counterfeit medicines, which may be ineffective or dangerous.

How to take Tadalafil pills correctly?

  • Take tadalafil pills with a glass of water 30–60 minutes before sexual activity
  • Take no more than one dose in 24 hours
  • Do not exceed the maximum dose of tadalafil in 24 hours – 20 mg
  • Sexual stimulation is required for the medicine to work

Avoid common mistakes:

  • Taking tadalafil too soon before intercourse
  • Heavy alcohol consumption
  • No sexual stimulation
  • Self-medicating or attempting to buy tadalafil over the counter

Contraindications for Tadalafil

You must not order Еadalafil or take it if you:

  • are allergic to tadalafil
  • use nitrates or nitric oxide donors (risk of severe hypotension)
  • have had a heart attack within the past 90 days
  • have had a stroke within the past 6 months
  • have very low or uncontrolled high blood pressure
  • have had vision loss due to NAION (“eye stroke”)
  • take riociguat
  • take strong CYP3A4 inhibitors (ketoconazole, ritonavir, clarithromycin)
  • take CYP3A4 inducers (rifampicin, carbamazepine), which reduce effectiveness
  • have conditions predisposing to priapism (sickle cell disease, multiple myeloma, leukaemia)

What side effects can occur with Tadalafil?

Common Tadalafil side effects include:

Headache, back pain, muscle pain, pain in the arms and legs, facial flushing, nasal congestion, indigestion or reflux.

Seek immediate medical attention if you experience the following symptoms:

  • Priapism (erection lasting more than 4 hours)
  • Sudden loss of sight or hearing
  • Chest pain during/after sexual intercourse
  • Allergic reactions (swelling, shortness of breath)
  • Severe dizziness or fainting (can indicate dangerously low blood pressure).

Most of the side effects are mild and temporary. No long-term side effects of tadalafil have been observed.

The lower the dosage of Tadalafil, the lower the risk of side effects and the shorter their duration.

For detailed safety information, refer to the official package leaflet.

Taking Tadalafil pills with other medicines

Tadalafil may interact with some other medicines.

You must not take tadalafil with nitrates.

Special care should be taken with the following medicines:

  • Alpha blockers
  • Other medicines for treating high blood pressure
  • Riociguat
  • 5-alpha reductase inhibitors
  • Ketoconazole and protease inhibitors
  • Phenobarbital, phenytoin and carbamazepine
  • Rifampicin, erythromycin, clarithromycin or itraconazole
  • Other medicines used to treat erectile dysfunction

Experiences with Tadalafil

Tadalafil impresses many users with its long duration of action and good tolerability.

Had trouble keeping fully erect, talked with doctor and started with 20 mg. Takes about 15 to 20 minutes to kick in, then lasts a day and a half. Wife is back to being fully satisfied and having sex several times a week. She loves the fact it increases circulation, as even if I’m limp, it appears bigger and longer, which gets her aroused more easily. No side effects unless you count a smile on your wife’s face." (drug.com)

Although some men report negative experiences with Tadalafil due to side effects, they say that the effect on erections is worth it.

I take 10 or 20mg as needed. I have a lot of flushing and feel achy the next day plus I experience pretty bad indigestion. I take aspirin and antacids to get through it. The side effects are well worth it as I tend to have marathon "sessions" after taking it." (healthunlocked.com)

Frequently asked questions about Tadalafil

We have compiled medical expertise on the product. However, this information does not replace medical advice.

  • Tadalafil vs Sildenafil – What’s the difference?+

    Asked by customer A.

Tadalafil and sildenafil are both effective treatments for erectile dysfunction, but they differ in duration and flexibility.

Sildenafil works for about 4–6 hours and is taken shortly before sex, while tadalafil lasts up to 36 hours, offering a longer window of spontaneity.

The best choice depends on how often you have sex, how quickly you want the medication to work, and how your body responds to each treatment.

  • Does tadalafil lower blood pressure?+

    Asked by customer C.

Yes. Tadalafil can cause a mild drop in blood pressure because it relaxes blood vessels. This is usually harmless for healthy men but can be dangerous when combined with nitrates, amyl nitrite (“poppers”) or certain heart medications, as the blood pressure may fall to unsafe levels. Always check with a doctor if you have cardiovascular conditions before taking tadalafil.

  • Does tadalafil increase testosterone?+

    Asked by customer I.

Although tadalafil is not a testosterone booster, some studies suggest that taking 5 mg of tadalafil daily can increase testosterone production and alleviate symptoms of low testosterone, such as erectile dysfunction and low sex drive.

    Answered by Apomeds experts
  • What happens if you stop taking Tadalafil?+

    Asked by customer Y.

If you stop taking tadalafil, its effects will gradually wear off and your erectile function will return to its baseline level before treatment. Tadalafil does not cure ED, so symptoms may reappear once the medication is discontinued.

    Answered by Apomeds experts
  • How long after taking tadalafil can I drink alcohol?+

    Asked by customer R.

Avoid heavy drinking during the full period tadalafil remains active—up to 36 hours. Excessive alcohol can worsen dizziness, lower blood pressure and reduce erection quality.

    Answered by Apomeds experts
  • How long does tadalafil stay in your system?+

    Asked by customer U.

Tadalafil stays active in the body for up to 36 hours, and small traces can remain for around 48 hours as it is slowly eliminated. This long half-life is why tadalafil should not be taken more than once every 24 hours.

    Answered by Apomeds experts
  • Is Tadalafil the same as Cialis?+

    Asked by customer H.

Yes. Both contain tadalafil. The differences lie in:

    • Tadalafil price – generics are 50–80% cheaper
    • Appearance – Cialis is yellow and almond-shaped; generics vary
    • Excipients – inactive ingredients may differ
    • Manufacturer – generics are produced by various companies; Cialis by Lilly
    Answered by Apomeds experts
  • How long does Tadalafil last?+

    Asked by customer W.

Up to 36 hours. This does not mean a continuous erection—only that erections are easier to achieve during this period with stimulation.

Tadalafil reaches its peak effect approximately 2 hours after ingestion. Afterwards, the effect gradually diminishes but persists for many more hours. On the second day, the effect is weaker than on the first day, but often still sufficient for sexual intercourse.

    Answered by Apomeds experts
  • Can you take Tadalafil daily?+

    Asked by customer J.

Tadalafil (10 mg or 20 mg) is intended to be taken on demand. The maximum dose of tadalafil for erectile dysfunction is 20 mg in 24 hours. Therefore, Tadalafil 20 mg should be taken no more than once a day, but it is not intended for daily use. A maximum of 3–4 doses per week is recommended. Those who are sexually active more frequently can discuss a daily maintenance dose of 5 mg with their doctor.
