    Important information about Wegovy® Pill

    What is the Wegovy pill?

The Wegovy pill is an oral formulation of semaglutide, the same active ingredient found in Wegovy injections, the subcutaneous injection that has been available in the UK since 2023. The pill version delivers semaglutide in tablet form, taken once daily, and is designed to offer the same mechanism of action as the injection but without the need for needles.

The concept of semaglutide in oral form is not entirely new. Rybelsus, which contains lower doses of oral semaglutide, has been licensed for the treatment of type 2 diabetes in the UK since 2020. The Wegovy pill uses a higher dose of the same molecule and has been specifically developed for weight management rather than diabetes. The key innovation is the addition of an absorption enhancer called SNAC (sodium N-[8-(2-hydroxybenzoyl)amino]caprylate), which enables the semaglutide, a protein that would usually be broken down by stomach acid, to be absorbed through the stomach lining.

As one of the newer weight loss treatments to reach clinical development, the oral semaglutide pill has generated significant interest from people who want the metabolic benefits of a GLP-1 receptor agonist but find injections a barrier to treatment.

How does the Wegovy pill work?

The Wegovy pill and the Wegovy injection work in the same way, through the same biological mechanism and by targeting the same receptors. The difference lies in how the drug enters the bloodstream. Understanding this mechanism can help you to set realistic expectations about what the pill does and doesn’t do.

The active ingredient in the Wegovy pill is semaglutide

Semaglutide is a GLP-1 receptor agonist, a synthetic version of a naturally occurring hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1). GLP-1 is produced in the gut after eating and plays several roles: it stimulates insulin release in response to blood sugar spikes, slows stomach emptying, and signals to the brain that you’ve eaten enough. Semaglutide mimics this natural hormone but with a much longer duration of action. [1]

In the injection form, semaglutide is administered subcutaneously once a week and absorbed directly into the bloodstream. In the pill form, a daily tablet taken on an empty stomach with a small sip of water uses the SNAC absorption technology to deliver semaglutide across the gastric mucosa before stomach acid breaks it down. The bioavailability of oral semaglutide is lower than that of the injected form, which is why the doses are higher. However, the therapeutic effect at the target dose is clinically comparable.

How the Wegovy pill reduces appetite

Once in the bloodstream, semaglutide activates GLP-1 receptors in the brain, particularly in the hypothalamus, the area responsible for regulating hunger and satiety. The result is a meaningful reduction in appetite and food cravings, earlier feelings of fullness from smaller meals, and a reduced tendency to think about food between eating occasions. These are not willpower-based changes; they are physiological shifts driven by the drug’s action on the central nervous system.

Semaglutide slows down the rate at which food moves through the stomach, prolonging satiety and helping to reduce blood sugar spikes after meals. For people with obesity or overweight, this combined effect on appetite and digestion is what drives the meaningful weight loss seen in clinical trials.

Is the Wegovy pill available in the UK?

Yes. On 11 June 2026, the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) approved oral semaglutide (sold under the brand name Wegovy) as the UK’s first GLP-1 receptor agonist tablet for weight loss and management, having met the MHRA’s rigorous safety, quality and effectiveness standards. [5]

The Wegovy pill may be prescribed to adults in the UK with a BMI of 30 or above (obesity), or a BMI between 27 and 30 with at least one weight-related comorbidity, alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. It is a prescription-only medication, and cannot be obtained without a valid prescription from a registered prescriber.

Whilst the tablet is approved for use in the UK, it is not yet available via the NHS. As with all new treatments, decisions on NHS use will follow established processes, including an evaluation by NICE. In the meantime, it is available through private prescription via licensed online pharmacies and healthcare services, including Apomeds.

Patients currently treated with the Wegovy injection once weekly may be able to move across to semaglutide 25 mg tablets once daily, and the approved product information sets out how this should be done.

How effective is the Wegovy pill? Study results

The clinical evidence for oral semaglutide at weight management doses is compelling. The OASIS programme (Novo Nordisk’s Phase III trial series for oral semaglutide in obesity) provides the most relevant data.

In the OASIS 1 trial, adults with obesity or overweight (BMI ≥30, or ≥27 with at least one weight-related health condition) who received oral semaglutide 50 mg daily alongside a reduced calorie diet and increased physical activity managed to lose weight at the rate of 15.1% of their starting body weight at 68 weeks, compared to 2.4% in the placebo group. [2]

In the OASIS 4 trial, conducted at the 25 mg dose that has actually been approved, adults with overweight or obesity and without diabetes lost a mean of around 13.6% of body weight at 64 weeks, compared with about 2.2% on placebo. [3]

An important caveat applies to these figures: the 15.1% result comes from OASIS 1, which used 50 mg daily – double the 25 mg maintenance dose approved in the UK. The trial matching the approved dose is OASIS 4, above. With that in mind, oral semaglutide is among the more effective weight loss tablets available. For context, the Wegovy injection (subcutaneous semaglutide 2.4 mg weekly) achieved approximately 14.9% weight loss in the STEP 1 trial – suggesting that at the appropriate dose, the oral formulation produces broadly comparable weight loss outcomes to the injection. [4]

Individual results vary depending on starting weight, adherence to the dosing schedule, diet, and physical activity. Clinical trials are conducted under controlled conditions; real-world results may differ, though the direction of effect is well established.

    Wegovy pill vs injection

The same active ingredient, two different delivery methods. The choice between the pill and the injection is not just a clinical one; it is also a practical decision based on your lifestyle, medical history and personal preferences.

    Effectiveness comparison

At their respective approved doses, oral semaglutide and the Wegovy injection produce broadly comparable weight loss. The OASIS 1 trial (15.1%) and the STEP 1 injection trial (14.9%) show near-identical outcomes, though these are different study populations and conditions, so direct comparison requires caution. [2, 4]

The injection delivers semaglutide with higher bioavailability; the pill compensates with a higher dose. At pharmacologically equivalent exposures, the two formulations appear to work in the same way and to a similar degree. Neither is definitively ‘stronger’ than the other when correctly dosed. The key facts to consider when choosing Wegovy pill or injection are:

Which option is right for you?

People who prefer the pill over the injection most commonly cite needle aversion, the convenience of a daily tablet taken alongside other medications, and the absence of injection site reactions. Those who respond well to the injection often prefer its once-weekly schedule, as it involves making one decision per week rather than having to be disciplined every day.

Medically, both are appropriate for the same eligible population. The choice between them is best made in consultation with a healthcare professional who can consider your full medical history, any other medication you take, and your practical circumstances. If you are currently on the injection and considering switching, or vice versa, read our guide to Wegovy pill vs injection before changing.

Wegovy pill dosage and how to take it

The Wegovy pill dosing schedule is gradual, designed to allow the body to adjust and to minimise gastrointestinal side effects. Do not accelerate the schedule without medical advice, and do not take a higher dose than prescribed.

Dosing schedule: from 1.5 mg to the 25 mg maintenance dose

    Weeks

    Daily dose

    Notes

    Month 1

    1.5 mg daily

Starting dose; lowest dose; allows body to adjust

    Month 2

    4 mg daily

First dose increase; minimum 1 month at each level

    Month 3

    9 mg daily

    Continue if well tolerated

    Month 4+

    25 mg daily

Maintenance dose; maximum dose per MHRA approval

The MHRA-approved dosing schedule requires a minimum of one month at each dose level before increasing. The four doses are 1.5 mg, 4 mg, 9 mg, and 25 mg. Your prescriber may adjust the rate of escalation based on your response and tolerability. The goal is to reach the maintenance dose of 25 mg, but some patients benefit from staying on an intermediate dose if side effects are persistent.

How to take the Wegovy pill correctly

Oral semaglutide must be taken in a very specific way to ensure adequate absorption. These instructions are not suggestions. Deviating from them significantly reduces how much of the drug reaches your bloodstream.

    • Fast for at least 8 hours before taking the tablet: Per the MHRA-approved patient information, the tablet must be taken after fasting for at least 8 hours – meaning first thing in the morning before breakfast, with no food or drink (other than water) since the night before.
    • Use a small sip of water only: Swallow with a sip of plain water – no more than a small amount. Do not use any other drink, including coffee, juice or milk.
    • Wait at least 30 minutes before eating or drinking: Do not eat or drink anything other than water for at least 30 minutes after taking the tablet. Eating or drinking within 30 minutes of taking the tablet meaningfully lowers absorption, per the MHRA guidance.
    • Swallow whole: Do not crush, split, or chew the tablet.
    • Take at the same time every day: Consistency improves adherence and maintains a stable blood level of the medication. Bear in mind that the 30-minute window applies to other tablets too: any other morning medication has to be pushed back. If you take levothyroxine, which has its own empty-stomach requirement, or anything else with strict timing, ask your prescriber how to fit the two schedules together.

Wegovy tablets can be taken with or without the oral contraceptive pill

Although studies show no clinically significant interaction, the oral contraceptive pill should still be taken separately from semaglutide, ideally after the 30-minute waiting period.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose, skip it entirely and take the next dose as usual the following morning. Do not take a double dose to compensate. Missing a single dose occasionally will not significantly affect your progress, but regular missed doses will reduce the effectiveness of the treatment. If you find it difficult to maintain a daily schedule, discuss this with your prescriber.

Who is eligible for taking Wegovy pills?

Eligibility criteria for the Wegovy pill mirror those for the Wegovy injection and other approved GLP-1 weight loss medication in the UK. A healthcare professional will assess your suitability based on your body mass index, medical conditions, and current medications.

BMI criteria for the Wegovy pill

The Wegovy pill is indicated for adults who meet one of the following criteria:

    • BMI of 30 or above (obesity)
    • BMI of 27 or above with at least one weight-related health condition, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes, obstructive sleep apnoea, or cardiovascular disease

These are the same BMI thresholds used for the Wegovy injection. A prescription will not be issued purely on the basis of cosmetic weight loss goals without meeting these clinical criteria.

Who shouldn’t take the Wegovy tablets?

The Wegovy pill is not appropriate for everyone. It should not be taken by:

    • People with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2)
    • People with a history of acute pancreatitis or chronic pancreatitis
    • Pregnant or breastfeeding women: semaglutide is not recommended during pregnancy and should be stopped at least two months before a planned pregnancy
    • People with severe heart failure or severe kidney failure
    • People with a known serious allergic reaction or hypersensitivity to semaglutide or any excipient in the tablet
    • People currently taking other GLP-1 receptor agonists or other weight loss medication: combination use is not recommended

If you have a history of gallstones, kidney or bladder stones, diabetic retinopathy, or are taking medication that affects blood sugar, make sure your prescriber is aware before starting treatment. A thorough medical assessment is part of the Apomeds consultation process.

Buy Wegovy pill online in the UK with a prescription

The Wegovy pill is a prescription-only medication. It cannot legally be supplied without a valid prescription issued by a registered prescriber. Any website offering it without a prescription or online consultation is operating outside UK law.

Obtaining a prescription online through a regulated weight loss service like Apomeds offers several practical advantages:

    • No waiting list: most online consultations are reviewed within hours, not weeks
    • Full medical assessment by a licensed prescriber: the same standard of clinical oversight, without the waiting room
    • Discreet delivery directly to your home in plain packaging
    • Easy dose review and repeat prescriptions without repeated appointments
    • Transparent pricing with no hidden fees

How to buy Wegovy pill online

To buy Wegovy pill online, complete the Apomeds medical questionnaire. A licensed prescriber will review your submission and, if you meet the eligibility criteria, issue a prescription.

The further dispensing process is handled by a partner pharmacy, with normal delivery taking up to three working days.

If you are also considering the injectable form, you can compare options or buy Mounjaro (an alternative GLP-1/GIP dual agonist) through the same process.

How much does the Wegovy pill cost?

Pricing for the Wegovy pill in the UK will depend on the dose, pack size, and individual pharmacy pricing at the time of dispensing. As a prescription-only medication that is still establishing its market position in the UK, the Wegovy pill price may shift as availability develops.

For comparison, the Wegovy injection in the UK currently costs approximately £95–£220 per month depending on dose and pack.

    Wegovy pill side effects

The side effect profile of the Wegovy pill is closely similar to that of the Wegovy injection, because the active ingredient is identical. Most side effects are gastrointestinal, most are mild to moderate, and most improve as the body adjusts over the first several weeks of treatment. A comprehensive overview is available in our guide to Wegovy pill side effects; the key points are summarised below.

    Common side effects

    Side effect

    How common

    Typical course

    Nausea / feeling sick

    Very common (~40%)

Most pronounced in first few weeks and after dose increases; improves as body adjusts

    Diarrhoea

    Common (~20%)

Usually mild; often settles within weeks

    Vomiting

    Common (~15%)

More likely if doses are escalated too quickly

    Constipation

    Common (~15%)

Manage with adequate hydration and fibre

    Stomach pain / upset stomach

    Common (~10%)

Often linked to meals; smaller meals help

    Headache

    Common (~10%)

    Typically mild; resolves spontaneously

    Fatigue

    Common

Often improves after the first few weeks

Low blood sugar (with diabetes medication)

    Common in T2D patients

Risk higher if also taking insulin or sulphonylureas

The most effective practical strategies for managing gastrointestinal side effects are eating smaller meals, avoiding fatty or spicy food, not lying down immediately after eating, and ensuring the tablet is taken correctly on an empty stomach.

    Rare but serious risks

The following are uncommon but require immediate medical attention if they occur:

    • Acute pancreatitis: Severe stomach pain that radiates to the back, often with nausea and vomiting. Stop taking the Wegovy pill and seek emergency care immediately.
    • Serious allergic reaction: Symptoms of a serious allergic reaction include difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, fast heartbeat, and low blood pressure. Call 999 immediately.
    • Gallstones: Rapid weight loss of any cause increases the risk of gallstones. Symptoms include pain in the upper right abdomen, nausea, and fever.
    • Diabetic retinopathy complications: Rapid blood sugar improvement can temporarily worsen pre-existing diabetic retinopathy. Patients with diabetes should have eye checks as recommended.
    • Thyroid tumours: A rare but documented risk based on animal studies; the drug is contraindicated in patients with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma.
    • Hair loss: Reported by some patients, likely related to rapid weight loss rather than the drug itself; usually temporary.
    • Abnormal skin sensations: Tingling or numbness reported in a small number of patients.
    • Kidney or bladder stones: Dehydration from nausea and vomiting may contribute; stay hydrated throughout treatment.

What to do if side effects are severe or persistent

Mild gastrointestinal symptoms in the first few weeks are expected and do not necessarily require stopping treatment. If side effects are severe, persistent, or significantly affecting your quality of life, contact your prescriber before stopping the medication unilaterally. A dose reduction or slower escalation schedule often resolves the problem. Read the patient information leaflet that comes with your medication for full guidance, and always seek medical attention for any of the serious symptoms listed above.

    Interactions and safety warnings

Oral semaglutide has a relatively limited drug interaction profile, but there are important considerations:

    • Insulin and sulphonylureas: Combining semaglutide with insulin or sulphonylureas significantly increases the risk of low blood sugar. Your prescriber may reduce your insulin dose when starting the Wegovy pill.
    • Oral medications with narrow therapeutic windows: Because semaglutide slows gastric emptying, other oral medications may be absorbed more slowly. This is particularly relevant for medications where blood levels need to be consistent, including some antibiotics, anticoagulants, and thyroid medications. Discuss your full medication list with your prescriber.
    • Oral contraceptive pill: No clinically significant interaction has been identified. The oral contraceptive pill remains effective when taken alongside semaglutide, but it should be taken after the 30-minute post-semaglutide waiting period.
    • Alcohol: There is no absolute contraindication, but drinking alcohol is not recommended in large quantities during weight loss treatment. Alcohol contributes calories, impairs judgement around food choices, and can worsen gastrointestinal symptoms.
    • Blood pressure medications: Weight loss itself can reduce blood pressure, which may require adjustments to antihypertensive doses over time. Monitor blood pressure regularly and inform your prescriber of any sudden changes. Surgery and sedation: because semaglutide slows gastric emptying, the stomach may still contain food after the usual pre-operative fasting, and cases of stomach contents being inhaled into the lungs during general anaesthesia or deep sedation have been reported. Tell the surgical team and anaesthetist about the treatment well before any planned procedure.

Always provide your prescriber with a full list of all medications you are taking, including over-the-counter medicines and supplements. This includes any other weight loss tablets or weight loss medication you may have used recently.

    Alternatives to the Wegovy pill

The Wegovy pill is one of several effective options for medically supervised weight management in the UK. Which treatment is right for you depends on your medical history, BMI, personal preferences, and how you respond to treatment. Beyond Wegovy injections, the main alternatives are:

Wegovy pill vs Mounjaro (tirzepatide, weekly injection)

Mounjaro contains tirzepatide, which is a dual GLP-1 and GIP receptor agonist. It is the only licensed weight loss treatment that activates two hormone pathways simultaneously.

In the SURMOUNT-5 trial, patients treated with tirzepatide achieved a mean weight loss of 20.2%, compared to 13.7% for those treated with semaglutide after 72 weeks — a statistically significant difference. [7] Mounjaro serves as a first-line alternative for people who have not achieved sufficient results on semaglutide, or who want to maximise weight loss outcomes.

    Saxenda (liraglutide, daily injection)

Saxenda contains liraglutide, an older GLP-1 receptor agonist injected daily rather than weekly. Although it is a well-established and safe treatment, it produces more modest weight loss than semaglutide or tirzepatide, typically around 5–10% of body weight. [8]

It remains a reasonable option for patients who have not tolerated semaglutide or tirzepatide, or where those treatments are contraindicated.

    Xenical (orlistat, oral capsule)

Xenical contains orlistat, which works via a completely different mechanism to GLP-1 receptor agonists. It is not a hormone-based treatment and does not affect appetite or the brain. Instead, orlistat blocks approximately one third of the fat consumed in a meal from being absorbed in the gut, reducing overall calorie intake from dietary fat. It is taken as a capsule three times daily with meals.

Although Xenical produces more modest weight loss than semaglutide or tirzepatide, it has a long safety record and has been available in the UK for decades. Furthermore, it carries no cardiovascular or thyroid contraindications. [9]

For people who cannot use GLP-1 receptor agonists due to a history of pancreatitis, medullary thyroid carcinoma, or severe gastrointestinal conditions, Xenical offers an evidence-based oral alternative.

Wegovy pill reviews: what do users report?

The Wegovy pill has only just been approved, and so far there is not a lot of long-term real-world review data for it. Most of the published patient experience so far relates to the injectable form. Early user accounts and feedback from people who took part in the clinical trials show a similar pattern to the injection experience, but with a few important differences because it is in pill form.

The most common reason people like it is that you don't have to get injections. People who switched from the Wegovy injection to the pill, or who chose the pill to avoid needles, say that this makes a big difference to their lives. The daily tablet routine is also said to be easier to fit into an existing medication schedule than managing a refrigerated pen.

How well does it work? People who take the tablet correctly (having not eaten for at least eight hours, with a small sip of water, and waiting thirty minutes before eating) say it makes them feel less hungry, fuller and that they lose weight about the same amount as they did with the injection.

"I'm in week 3 of the wegovy pill after moving over from compounded semaglutide. One difference that I've noticed is that I'll feel hungrier and have a taste for richer foods. But once I start eating, I only want to eat about half of what I've prepared/ordered." reddit.com

Overall, the early reviews of the Wegovy pill are positive among those who take it correctly and consistently. The recurring message is that patience during the dosage escalation period is rewarded with significant, long-term weight loss.

    • Yes. On 11 June 2026, the MHRA approved the Wegovy pill (oral semaglutide), making it the UK’s first GLP-1 receptor agonist tablet for weight loss and management. It is available on private prescription. NHS availability is subject to a NICE evaluation and is not yet confirmed.

    • Yes. The Wegovy pill is a prescription-only medication in the UK. It cannot be obtained over the counter. Any online source offering it without a prescription is operating illegally. Apomeds provides a licensed online consultation and prescription service.

    • In the OASIS 1 clinical trial, participants taking oral semaglutide 50 mg alongside a reduced calorie diet and increased physical activity lost a mean of 15.1% of their starting body weight over 68 weeks, compared to 2.4% in the placebo group. Individual results vary and depend on adherence, diet, and exercise.

    • Same active ingredient (semaglutide), different delivery method. The pill is taken daily on an empty stomach; the injection is taken once a week. Clinical trial data suggests broadly comparable weight loss at their respective approved doses. The pill suits people who prefer not to inject; the injection suits those who prefer weekly rather than daily dosing. See our full comparison guide for more detail.

    • Not currently. The Wegovy pill received MHRA approval on 11 June 2026, but as with all newly approved treatments, NHS availability follows a separate process. NICE will evaluate the pill before it can be made routinely available on the NHS. In the meantime, it is available on private prescription through licensed services including Apomeds.

    • The most common side effects are gastrointestinal: nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, constipation, and stomach pain. Most are mild to moderate and improve over the first few weeks as the body adjusts. Serious but rare risks include acute pancreatitis, serious allergic reactions, gallstones, and hair loss. Full details are in the patient information leaflet supplied with your medication.

    • When treatment stops, the appetite-suppressing effects of semaglutide wear off. Most people regain weight, often returning toward their starting weight over several months to a year. This is not a sign of failure; it reflects the underlying biology of obesity, which requires ongoing management. Any decision to stop treatment should be made with your healthcare professional, not unilaterally.

    • Switching is possible but should always be done under medical supervision. There is no established crossover protocol, and your prescriber will advise on timing, particularly the gap after your last injection before starting the daily tablet. Buy Mounjaro or the Wegovy injection through Apomeds and raise the question of switching during your consultation.

    • Complete the Apomeds online medical questionnaire. A UK-registered prescriber will review your submission and, if you meet the eligibility criteria (BMI, medical history, current medications), issue a prescription. The medication is then dispensed and delivered to your home. The entire process is confidential, regulated, and typically completed within one to two working days.
