Can you drink alcohol with Sildenafil?
For many men taking Sildenafil for male erectile dysfunction, drinking alcohol in a small amount is not specifically contraindicated. UK product information reports that sildenafil 50 mg did not increase alcohol’s blood-pressure-lowering effect in healthy volunteers. A separate crossover study in eight healthy men also found no clinically important adverse haemodynamic interaction when sildenafil 100 mg was taken with red wine. [1, 2]
That is reassuring, but it does not mean side effects are impossible or that the combination is suitable for everyone. Alcohol consumption can affect sexual arousal and erectile function, while sildenafil can cause headache, dizziness, facial flushing and a temporary BP drop. Drinking heavily may therefore worsen sexual performance even without a major direct drug interaction. [1, 3]
Sildenafil supports the nitric oxide pathway that relaxes blood vessels and increases blood flow to the penis during sexual stimulation. This increased blood flow helps an erection develop when there is sexual arousal; the tablet does not create desire or an erection by itself. If drinking alcohol blunts that response, there may simply be less for sildenafil to support. [1]
For an otherwise healthy man who has been supplied the medicine appropriately, moderate alcohol consumption is generally less concerning than excessive alcohol consumption. How much alcohol you have, your usual blood pressure (BP), other medicines and cardiovascular health still matter. If you have specific health concerns, seek medical advice rather than relying on a fixed number of drinks.
Before looking at quantity, it helps to separate the medicine from the brand name.
Does generic Sildenafil follow the same drink rules as Viagra?
Yes. Generic sildenafil and Viagra contain sildenafil citrate, so both sildenafil products follow the same alcohol considerations when used for erectile dysfunction. Viagra Connect also contains sildenafil 50 mg; its UK product information advises avoiding large amounts before sexual activity because excessive drinking can temporarily make it harder to get an erection. [3]
Sildenafil is used to treat ED, but it does not create sexual desire or remove the need for sexual stimulation.
Viagra with alcohol raises the same considerations as generic sildenafil because Viagra contains sildenafil. Viagra is often referred to as the blue pill, but the same alcohol considerations apply because its active ingredient is sildenafil. The practical considerations around alcohol and Viagra are therefore the same: sexual stimulation is still needed, and heavy drinking can make erections harder. The same principles apply to Viagra and alcohol more generally.
What can affect Sildenafil if you drink?
Does alcohol stop sildenafil working? Not directly. Sildenafil acts on blood flow during sexual stimulation, whereas alcohol can affect the central nervous system, judgement, coordination, sexual arousal and erectile function. At higher doses, alcohol’s effects on the central nervous system can make sexual performance less predictable, while long-term heavy drinking is associated with erectile dysfunction and broader sexual dysfunction. [4]
If you are worried about Sildenafil not working, heavy drinking may be part of the explanation: alcohol can impair erectile function and sexual performance without blocking sildenafil in the bloodstream. Chronic excessive alcohol consumption can also affect cardiovascular, neurological, hormonal and psychological pathways that contribute to erectile dysfunction. [4]
Food and other medicines can then add separate effects of their own.
Can a heavy meal change things if you also drink?
Yes. A heavy meal can delay sildenafil absorption, so taking sildenafil after a large meal may delay when the effect is noticed. This is separate from alcohol intake: food affects absorption, while alcohol can independently impair sexual performance. [1, 5]
For erectile dysfunction, sildenafil is usually taken about one hour before sexual activity. Because food can delay absorption, the timing of your Sildenafil dosage matters, particularly if a heavy meal and alcohol are also involved. A heavy meal plus a few drinks may make the evening feel less predictable even though there is no special three-way interaction between food, sildenafil and alcohol. [1]
Grapefruit juice is different. NHS guidance advises avoiding grapefruit and grapefruit juice while taking sildenafil because they can increase the risk of side effects. [5] Alcohol induced gastric damage is also an effect of alcohol itself at higher exposures: ethanol can damage the gastric mucosal barrier, but this is not a recognised sildenafil-and-alcohol interaction. [6]
Do age and other medicines change the risk?
They can. Age alone does not require routine dose adjustment, but other medicines and cardiovascular health can make BP effects more important. Sildenafil relaxes blood vessels and can cause a mild, temporary BP fall. [1]
Alpha-blockers can cause symptomatic low blood pressure in susceptible people. In one study, sildenafil 100 mg with amlodipine produced an additional average reduction of 8 mmHg systolic and 7 mmHg diastolic. Pooled trial data did not show a different overall side-effect profile with several common antihypertensives, but individual medical advice still matters. [1]
Sildenafil is also used under specialist supervision for pulmonary arterial hypertension, sometimes described more broadly as pulmonary hypertension. That is a different indication with different dosing and monitoring. For pulmonary arterial hypertension, treatment aims to improve exercise capacity and disease control is assessed in a specialist setting; advice for occasional erectile dysfunction treatment should not simply be transferred to that use. View all productsWhich side effects can show up if you drink on Sildenafil?
Recognised side effects of sildenafil include headache, facial flushing, dizziness, indigestion, nasal congestion and visual disturbances. Drinking alcohol can also cause headache, flushing or dizziness, so combining alcohol with sildenafil may make some side effects more noticeable, particularly when alcohol consumption is high. Both sildenafil and alcohol can contribute to dizziness, even when the exact cause is unclear. [1, 5]
An observational sexual medicine study of 325 men using ED medications found more headache and flushing among men who used PDE5 inhibitors with alcohol. Many concomitant users consumed above average amounts: 64.8% reported more than 15 drinks per week, compared with 14.1% of the non-concomitant group. This does not make 15 drinks a sildenafil-specific threshold, and the study included several ED medications rather than sildenafil alone. [8]
The finding suggests an increased risk of troublesome side effects among heavier users, not a precise cut-off. These side effects can also occur without alcohol. Excessive alcohol consumption can cause dizziness itself. If combining alcohol and sildenafil repeatedly brings on stronger side effects, seek medical advice. Side effects that are severe or persistent should not simply be ignored.
Long-term alcohol intake can affect sexual health in other ways. A meta-analysis associated chronic alcohol consumption with lower total and free testosterone in healthy men, suggesting one route by which sustained heavy drinking may affect testosterone production and sexual function. [9]
Headache, flushing and dizziness are recognised Sildenafil side effects, so alcohol can make it harder to tell what is causing a symptom—and may make it feel worse.
Some people need a stricter approach because alcohol itself may already be medically inappropriate.
Who should avoid alcohol with Sildenafil altogether?
Anyone already advised not to drink because of alcohol dependence, previous alcohol abuse, liver disease or another medical condition should continue following that advice. Alcohol dependent men may need treatment for the alcohol problem itself rather than guidance framed around moderate drinking.
Professional medical advice is also important if you tend towards low blood pressure, experience dizziness or fainting, or take medicines that can lower BP. The aim is to use sildenafil safely, not to find an alcohol level that overrides existing health risks. If abstinence has been recommended because of another condition, that advice takes priority.
How much alcohol can you drink with Sildenafil?
There is no official UK sildenafil-specific alcohol limit. General UK low-risk guidance says men and women should not regularly exceed 14 units a week, and if drinking that much, it should be spread across three or more days. One unit is 10 mL or 8 g of pure alcohol. [10]
That is not permission to drink 14 units on the same evening as sildenafil. How much alcohol is sensible on one occasion depends on your usual alcohol intake, health, medicines and how alcohol affects you. Moderate alcohol consumption is a useful description, but UK guidance does not define sildenafil safety as “one or two drinks per day”.
For many otherwise healthy men, one or two drinks may not produce a clinically important direct interaction, but no amount guarantees safety. Moderate alcohol and moderate drinking are preferable to heavy drinking, while binge drinking and excessive drinking should be avoided. Viagra Connect information specifically advises against large amounts before sexual activity. [3]
If you drink regularly, overall alcohol consumption matters too. Long-term heavy drinking is linked with erectile dysfunction and sexual dysfunction, and excessive alcohol consumption may undermine sexual performance whether or not ED medications are used. [4]
There is also no special clock rule that makes a large alcohol intake harmless once enough time has passed.
Do you need to wait after a drink before you take the tablet?
There is no evidence-based rule requiring a fixed waiting period after drinking alcohol before taking sildenafil. What matters more is your alcohol intake, whether you feel intoxicated or dizzy, which medicines you take and whether your BP or heart health makes combining alcohol more risky.
For erectile dysfunction, taking sildenafil is usually recommended around one hour before sexual activity. [1] If you have already had a large amount of alcohol and feel unwell, dizzy or intoxicated, a fixed waiting interval should not be treated as reassurance. Seek medical advice if you are unsure whether taking sildenafil is appropriate.
When should you get medical help?
Some immediate health risks are uncommon but important. Get urgent medical help for chest pain, fainting, a sudden visual problem a sudden change in hearing, or an erection lasting longer than four hours after taking sildenafil. Prolonged or painful erections can damage penile tissue if treatment is delayed. Severe dizziness or near-fainting also needs prompt assessment, particularly if low blood pressure may be involved. [1]
These are recognised sildenafil warnings rather than proof that alcohol caused the reaction. If chest pain develops during or after sexual activity, stop and get urgent medical help. Do not self-treat that chest pain with nitrate medicines after taking sildenafil. Tell the medical professional who treats you that sildenafil was taken, because combining sildenafil with nitrates or other nitric oxide donors can cause a dangerous BP fall. [1]
Frequently asked questions about Sildenafil and alcohol
Questions about sildenafil and alcohol usually come down to quantity, timing and other medicines. The answer can therefore differ between an otherwise healthy person having a small drink and someone with BP problems, heavy alcohol intake or interacting medication.
Is a drink okay after the tablet has started working?
A small drink is not automatically unsafe simply because sildenafil has started working, but alcohol can still affect sexual performance during the medicine’s active window. Sildenafil has a terminal half-life of around three to five hours and supports erectile function in response to sexual stimulation rather than producing a continuous erection. [1]
Keep alcohol consumption modest. More alcohol does not improve blood flow or the medicine’s effect; healthy blood flow still depends on sexual arousal and sexual stimulation for adequate flow to the penis and an erection.
Is it too late if you have already been drinking?
Not necessarily. Having some alcohol does not automatically mean you cannot take sildenafil, and a limited alcohol intake does not mean the tablet can never be taken. However, if you have been drinking heavily, feel dizzy or faint, or have other health concerns, taking sildenafil should not be treated as routine.
The key issue is not whether alcohol entered your system first, but whether combining alcohol with the medicine is sensible in your circumstances. If there is uncertainty, seek medical advice before taking sildenafil.
Does Viagra Connect follow the same alcohol rules?
Yes. Viagra Connect contains sildenafil 50 mg. Its UK product information says excessive alcohol can temporarily reduce the ability to get an erection and advises against large amounts before sex. [3]
In other words, taking Viagra follows the same basic principle as the generic medicine: moderate alcohol is less concerning than excessive intake, and sexual stimulation is still required before Viagra works.
Does alcohol change how long Sildenafil lasts?
There is no good evidence that moderate alcohol consumption significantly changes sildenafil’s pharmacological half-life. Sildenafil itself has a terminal half-life of around three to five hours, but an erection does not last for that period. The medicine supports blood flow to the penis when sexual stimulation occurs. [1]
Alcohol may instead alter erectile function or sexual arousal during that window. Tadalafil lasts longer than sildenafil, so the timing questions around Cialis and alcohol are different from those for sildenafil.
Can I take Sildenafil if I am already on blood pressure tablets?
It can be possible, but it depends on which tablets you take and your health. Sildenafil has been used alongside several types of antihypertensive medicine, but alpha-blockers can increase the chance of symptomatic low blood pressure in susceptible people. Sildenafil with amlodipine has also produced a small additional BP reduction in a clinical interaction study. [1]
Tell the prescriber or pharmacist about all your medicines before taking sildenafil. Medical advice is especially important if you already experience low blood pressure, dizziness, fainting or cardiovascular symptoms.
What should I never mix with Sildenafil and a drink?
Never take sildenafil with nitrate medicines or nitric oxide donors such as amyl nitrite “poppers”, because the combination can cause a potentially dangerous BP fall. Riociguat is also contraindicated with sildenafil. [1]
Recreational drug use adds another risk. NHS guidance warns that drugs such as poppers, as well as amphetamines, ecstasy or cocaine, can increase the risk of side effects with sildenafil. [5] If you are unsure whether a medicine or drug is compatible, get medical advice before taking sildenafil. Using sildenafil safely means avoiding contraindicated combinations rather than trying to offset them with food, timing or alcohol.
