How much weight can the Wegovy pill help you lose?
The Wegovy pill can lead to meaningful weight loss, but there is no single figure that predicts how much weight someone will lose. In the OASIS 4 clinical trial, adults taking the Wegovy pill alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity achieved average weight loss of 13.6% of body weight after 64 weeks, compared with 2.2% with placebo. The average weight loss was 14.2 kg from a starting weight of 106.4 kg. [1]
Those are useful benchmarks for the Wegovy pill, but they are still averages. In OASIS 4, 76.3% of participants taking the Wegovy pill achieved at least 5% weight loss, 59.8% at least 10%, 47.0% at least 15%, and 27.5% at least 20%. [1, 2] Some people lose more weight than the average, while others lose less.
OASIS 4, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, included adults without diabetes who had obesity, or overweight plus a weight-related condition. [1] In the UK, the Wegovy pill is licensed for eligible adults with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 kg/m² or above, or 27 to below 30 kg/m² with a weight-related condition, alongside diet and physical activity. [2]
So, how much weight can you lose? The strongest evidence for the Wegovy pill points to average weight loss of 13.6% over 64 weeks, while also showing that Wegovy pill weight loss results vary considerably. If you are considering theWegovy pill, it makes more sense to judge weight loss over months than against a fixed first-month target.
When will you notice the Wegovy pill working?
There is no set week when everyone will notice the Wegovy pill start working. In OASIS 4, weight loss began early and continued throughout the 64-week study, but the trial does not establish a standard amount of weight loss for week four, month two or month three. [2]
Taking the Wegovy pill begins with a low dose of 1.5 mg daily. The dose increases from this low dose to 4 mg, then 9 mg and 25 mg, after at least one month at each level. For the Wegovy pill, the 25 mg dose is the maximum dose. [2] The Wegovy pill dosage schedule increases gradually from 1.5 mg to 25 mg to help the body adjust to treatment.
How much weight might come off quickly? How much weight you lose in those early months can vary. Could you lose 30 pounds (13.6 kg) in two months or 20 pounds (9.1 kg) in three? Neither amount should be treated as a standard Wegovy pill result. In OASIS 4, average weight loss of 14.2 kg occurred over 64 weeks. Weight loss can happen gradually, and some people notice significant changes earlier than others. [1]
What to expect in the first few weeks, including side effects
The first few weeks are mainly about starting treatment safely and helping your body adjust before moving to a higher dose. This low dose is part of the planned escalation. Noticeable weight loss may come later, and the point at which you notice significant changes varies. For some people, noticeable weight loss takes longer.
Gastrointestinal side effects are very common with the Wegovy pill. In OASIS 4, 74.0% of people taking oral semaglutide reported gastrointestinal adverse events, compared with 42.2% taking placebo. [1] UK product information for the Wegovy pill says these effects were reported most often during dose escalation. Most nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea episodes were mild to moderate and short-lived, while constipation could last longer. These side effects often ease over time. [2]
That does not mean side effects are a sign that treatment is working. UK product information notes that weight loss occurred whether or not participants experienced nausea, vomiting or diarrhoea. [2] If side effects are persistent or severe, speak to your doctor, pharmacist or prescriber rather than changing the dose yourself. Persistent or severe Wegovy pill side effects should be discussed with your doctor, pharmacist or prescriber rather than managed by changing the dose yourself.
Are Wegovy pill weight loss results similar to the injection?
Wegovy pill weight loss results and Wegovy injection results were broadly similar in separate clinical trials, although the treatments were not compared head to head. OASIS 4 found average weight loss of 13.6% at 64 weeks with the 25 mg Wegovy pill. [1] STEP 1 found average weight loss of 14.9% at 68 weeks with the 2.4 mg weekly Wegovy injection, compared with 2.4% with placebo. [3]
These trial averages should not be read as a promise that the Wegovy pill and Wegovy injection will produce the same result for an individual. People lose weight differently, and oral semaglutide has more variable absorption than injected semaglutide. [2] That is one reason weight loss results can differ even when people appear to be following treatment in similar ways.
The STEP programme is a series of clinical trials evaluating injected semaglutide for weight loss. UK Wegovy injection information also says that if someone has not lost at least 5% of their initial body weight after six months, a decision is required on continuing treatment. The Wegovy pill SmPC does not contain the same six-month rule. [4]
There are practical differences too. The Wegovy injection is taken once weekly under the skin, while taking the Wegovy pill means one tablet every day with specific fasting instructions. [2, 4] Injection site reactions are listed for the injection, whereas the Wegovy pill does not require one. [4] Avoiding injection site reactions may matter to someone who dislikes needles or has previously experienced injection site reactions. These injection site reactions are a practical difference, not a sign that one option will produce greater weight loss.
Injected Wegovy also has cardiovascular outcome evidence in a specific higher-risk population. In SELECT, adults aged 45 or older with established cardiovascular disease and overweight or obesity, but without diabetes, had fewer major cardiovascular events with semaglutide 2.4 mg than with placebo: 6.5% versus 8.0%. [5] This evidence relates to the Wegovy injection, not the Wegovy pill.
Our Wegovy pill vs injection guide explains the practical differences, while Wegovy online covers the injectable treatment. The separate trials produced broadly similar average weight loss results at 64 to 68 weeks, but they do not prove that either formulation gives better weight loss results for a particular person.

Why might your Wegovy pill results be lower than expected?
Lower-than-expected Wegovy pill results do not necessarily mean you have done anything wrong. People lose different amounts of weight, and oral semaglutide has greater variability in absorption than semaglutide by injection. [2]
Starting weight was one factor associated with variation in treatment effect in OASIS 4. [2] Underlying health conditions may affect treatment suitability, while side effects can make dose progression harder. A low dose early in treatment should not be compared with several months at a higher dose, when some people may lose more weight.
How the Wegovy pill is taken is particularly important. The UK Summary of Product Characteristics published on the Electronic Medicines Compendium states that adherence to the administration instructions is recommended for optimal effect when response is lower than expected. [2]
Does how you take the Wegovy pill change your results?
Yes. Taking the Wegovy pill correctly matters because food, drink and other tablets can affect semaglutide absorption.
Take the Wegovy pill once daily on an empty stomach after fasting for at least eight hours. Swallow it whole with no more than 120 mL of water, then wait at least 30 minutes before food, drink or other oral medicines. Waiting less than 30 minutes reduces absorption. [2]
For many people, taking the Wegovy pill after an overnight fast may fit naturally into a daily routine, provided the fasting and waiting instructions are followed. Taking the Wegovy pill on an empty stomach and taking the medication consistently gives it the best chance to be absorbed as intended. Keeping that same daily routine can also make it easier to avoid accidental changes in how the medicine is taken.
If you are missing doses, do not take extra tablets. Skip the missed dose and take the next dose the following day. [2] Taking more than one tablet to imitate a higher dose is not recommended. The maximum dose is one 25 mg tablet daily. [2]
This is one reason Wegovy pill weight loss results can differ. Even when people are taking the Wegovy pill at the same dose, absorption varies, so weight loss results cannot be predicted precisely.
What helps the Wegovy pill work better?
The Wegovy pill is licensed to be used with a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, rather than as a replacement for them in weight management. [2, 6] Taking the Wegovy pill consistently, following the empty stomach instructions and increasing the dose only as prescribed can make treatment easier to build into a steady daily routine.
The Wegovy pill contains semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist involved in appetite and food intake. Semaglutide can reduce appetite, increase fullness and reduce food cravings, which may make it easier to eat fewer calories. [2] Fewer calories over time can contribute to weight loss.
Can you lose weight by just taking the Wegovy pill? The medicine itself has a pharmacological effect, but the evidence for Wegovy pill weight loss results comes from treatment used alongside diet and physical activity. [1, 2] Sustainable weight loss therefore depends on more than simply taking the tablet.
The pace of weight loss can change over time. Some people lose more weight earlier; others have slower weight loss results. Do not move to a higher dose faster than prescribed in an attempt to achieve more weight loss. If your response to the Wegovy pill is lower than expected, or a higher dose is difficult to tolerate, discuss your progress with your prescriber.
Frequently asked questions about Wegovy pill results
Wegovy pill results vary, and it is easy to mix up evidence about the tablet with evidence from injected semaglutide. The answers below separate the two where that distinction matters.
Is the Wegovy pill approved in the UK?
Yes. The MHRA approved the Wegovy pill on 11 June 2026 for weight loss and weight management in eligible UK adults alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. It was the first GLP-1 receptor agonist tablet approved in the UK for this purpose. [6]
Can I buy the Wegovy pill without a prescription?
No. The Wegovy pill is prescription-only in the UK. [2] A prescriber needs to assess whether you meet the licensed criteria and whether taking the Wegovy pill is suitable for you.
Do some people lose 20% or more on the Wegovy pill?
Yes. In OASIS 4, 27.5% of people taking the 25 mg Wegovy pill achieved weight loss of at least 20% by week 64, compared with 3.0% with placebo. [2] However, average weight loss was 13.6%, so 20% or more is not the expected weight loss result for everyone.
Some people experience significant weight loss or lose more weight than average, while others lose less.
Will I regain weight if I stop taking the Wegovy pill?
Weight regain can occur after stopping semaglutide, although the best quantified withdrawal evidence comes from the Wegovy injection rather than the Wegovy pill. In the STEP 1 extension, participants regained around two-thirds of their previous weight loss during the year after semaglutide 2.4 mg and the structured lifestyle programme were stopped. [7]
Longer-term injection evidence shows that weight loss can also be maintained with continued treatment. In STEP 5, average weight loss was 15.2% at 104 weeks, 34.5% achieved at least 20% weight loss in the regulatory analysis, and average weight loss plateaued at around week 68 before being maintained. [4, 8] These are Wegovy injection results, not pill-specific results.
Does the Wegovy pill have the same effect as Rybelsus or Ozempic?
The Wegovy pill, Rybelsus and Ozempic all contain semaglutide, but they are not the same treatment. The Wegovy pill is licensed for weight loss in eligible adults and has a 25 mg daily maintenance dose. [2] Rybelsus is an oral semaglutide medicine licensed for type 2 diabetes, with daily maintenance doses of 4 mg or 9 mg. [9]
Ozempic also contains semaglutide, but it is an injection licensed for adults with insufficiently controlled type 2 diabetes. [10] Different doses, formulations and licensed uses mean weight loss results from one product should not automatically be applied to another.
How do I get a Wegovy pill prescription?
You need an assessment from an appropriate prescriber. In the UK, the Wegovy pill is licensed for adults with a BMI of 30 kg/m² or above, or 27 to below 30 kg/m² with at least one weight-related condition. [2, 6]
The assessment considers your health history, other medicines and whether taking the Wegovy pill is suitable.
