Wegovy and Ozempic are prescription medicines made by Novo Nordisk. Both contain the same active ingredient, semaglutide, but they are licensed for different purposes in the UK: Wegovy mainly for obesity treatment and Ozempic for type 2 diabetes. They also follow different dosage schedules and reach different dose ceilings. [1, 2]

Do Ozempic and Wegovy have the same ingredients? The injectable products contain the same active ingredient and their UK formulations list the same inactive ingredients. However, they are supplied in different concentrations, strengths and pen devices, follow different dosage schedules and are licensed for different purposes. They are different branded products containing the same drug and should not be treated as interchangeable.

This article compares the injectable forms of the two medicines. Both injections are used once weekly. An oral (tablet) formulation of Wegovy has also been licensed in the UK. It is taken once daily and has different instructions, so it is not included in this comparison. [3]

The key differences are licensing, dose and treatment goal. For weight loss injections, Wegovy is the licensed semaglutide brand, whereas Ozempic is primarily used to manage diabetes. [1, 2, 4]

What are Wegovy and Ozempic?

Wegovy and Ozempic are GLP-1 receptor agonists. The active ingredient semaglutide imitates a natural hormone involved in appetite, digestion, insulin production and blood sugar regulation. [1, 2]

What is Wegovy used for?

Wegovy is a weight loss medication used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. In adults, the UK licence covers a body mass index of at least 30, or at least 27 with a weight-related medical condition, sometimes described as a weight-related health condition, such as high blood pressure, abnormal blood fats, obstructive sleep apnoea, cardiovascular disease or prediabetes. It may also be used by adolescents aged 12 and over who meet the product criteria. [1]

The current UK licence also covers cardiovascular risk reduction in certain adults with established heart disease and the treatment of non-cirrhotic metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH) in eligible adults with moderate to advanced liver fibrosis. [1] NHS access for weight management is narrower than the full licence and generally requires specialist services and additional NICE criteria. [5]

Wegovy was first approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for chronic weight management in adults in June 2021. [6] UK licensing and prescribing decisions are separate. Wegovy is sometimes described as a new weight loss drug, but semaglutide had already been used in diabetes care; what changed was the dose, trial programme and obesity-treatment licence.

What is Ozempic used for?

Ozempic is licensed to treat diabetes, specifically, insufficiently controlled type 2 diabetes in adults, alongside diet and exercise. It may be used alone when metformin is unsuitable or with other medications for diabetes management. [2]

Its purpose is to control blood sugar levels, improve HbA1c and reduce the risk of some diabetes related complications. Persistently high glucose can damage blood vessels and nerves. Weight loss can occur, but it is a secondary benefit rather than the licensed reason for prescribing Ozempic. Using Ozempic for weight loss alone is off-label in the UK, and the MHRA advises using GLP-1 medicines only for their authorised purposes. [2, 4]

How semaglutide works in the body

The active ingredient semaglutide works in the same way in both brands. It helps the body release insulin when glucose is high, reduces glucagon release and slows stomach emptying. These effects help regulate blood sugar and can lower blood sugar levels without usually causing hypoglycaemia on their own. [1, 2]

Semaglutide also acts on brain areas that regulate appetite. People often feel full sooner, remain satisfied for longer and reduce their calorie intake. This can help people lose weight when treatment is combined with sustainable lifestyle changes, healthy habits and a diet containing fewer highly processed foods.

Wegovy vs Ozempic: dosage and how to use them

Both Wegovy and Ozempic begin at a low dose and increase gradually while the body adjusts. Their different dosage schedules reflect their different treatment goals.

For the injectable products compared here, both are administered once weekly under the skin. Use one of the recommended injection areas. The injections can be taken with or without meals, so neither has to be used on an empty stomach. [1, 2]

Wegovy dosage schedule

The usual Wegovy dosage schedule is:

  • Weeks 1–4: 0.25 mg once weekly
  • Weeks 5–8: 0.5 mg once weekly
  • Weeks 9–12: 1 mg once weekly
  • Weeks 13–16: 1.7 mg once weekly
  • From week 17: 2.4 mg maintenance dose

A prescriber may delay an increase or return to the previous dose if side effects are difficult to tolerate. In eligible adults with obesity, the maintenance dose may later be increased from 2.4 mg to 7.2 mg after at least four weeks at 2.4 mg. [1]

The dosage schedule should never be accelerated without clinical advice. A higher dose may support weight loss for some people, but it can also increase adverse effects.

Ozempic dosage schedule

The standard Ozempic dosage schedule starts at 0.25 mg weekly for four weeks, followed by 0.5 mg. If further blood sugar control is needed, the dose may rise to 1 mg after at least four weeks and then to a maximum dose of 2 mg after another four weeks.

The 0.25 mg dose is a starter dose, not a maintenance dose. Changes are based on diabetes management needs rather than a weight loss target. Insulin or sulfonylurea doses may also need adjustment to reduce the risk of hypoglycaemia. [2]

Which is more effective for weight loss?

Clinical trials show that Wegovy is generally the more appropriate semaglutide weight loss treatment because it is licensed for that purpose and uses doses studied specifically for obesity. Ozempic can reduce body weight in people with type 2 diabetes, but its main purpose is glycaemic control.

Wegovy weight loss results

In the STEP UP trial, adults with obesity using 7.2 mg semaglutide lost an average of 18.7% of body weight at 72 weeks under the treatment-policy analysis, compared with 15.6% at 2.4 mg and 3.9% with placebo. About 91% of participants receiving 7.2 mg lost at least 5% of their starting weight. An additional analysis estimating results if everyone remained on treatment found average weight loss of 20.7%, often rounded to 21%. [7]

Earlier STEP 1 research found average weight loss of 14.9% after 68 weeks with 2.4 mg semaglutide, compared with 2.4% with placebo. [8] Results vary depending on dose, adherence, starting body weight and lifestyle changes.

Can you lose 30 pounds in three months on Wegovy? Some people may, particularly from a higher starting weight, but it is not a reliable expectation. The first three months mainly involve dose escalation, and weight loss varies considerably between individuals. Increasing the dose more quickly than recommended does not improve outcomes and increases the risk of side effects.

Ozempic for weight loss: results

Ozempic is not licensed for weight management. It was developed and approved for the treatment of type 2 diabetes, although weight loss has consistently been observed in clinical trials. In SUSTAIN 2, participants lost an average of 4.3 kg with 0.5 mg and 6.1 kg with 1 mg after 56 weeks. SUSTAIN FORTE recorded average reductions of 6.0 kg with 1 mg and 6.9 kg with 2 mg after 40 weeks. [2]

These findings relate to people with type 2 diabetes, not a general obesity population. They should not be used to predict what someone without diabetes would lose through non-indicated Ozempic use.

Which works better for weight loss?

For weight loss, Wegovy usually has the advantage because it is a dedicated weight loss medication, reaches a higher licensed dose and has been tested specifically for weight management. That does not mean everyone will respond in the same way.

The better option is the medicine licensed for the person's health needs. Wegovy may suit eligible people seeking obesity treatment, while Ozempic may suit adults who need to manage diabetes and could benefit from weight reduction as an additional effect.

Side effects: how do Wegovy and Ozempic compare?

A man is clutching his stomach in pain

Wegovy and Ozempic contain the same active ingredient, so their safety profiles overlap. Side effects vary depending on dose, individual sensitivity, other medications and existing health conditions.

Common side effects of both

Common effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, indigestion and abdominal pain. Headache, tiredness and reduced appetite may also occur. These symptoms often appear when treatment starts, or the dose rises, and may improve as the body adjusts. [1, 2]

Digestive side effects tend to occur more frequently during Wegovy treatment because the approved maintenance dose is higher than that used with Ozempic. Ozempic can cause the same problems, particularly during dose escalation.

Are Wegovy side effects worse than Ozempic?

They are not automatically worse, but higher semaglutide exposure can make gastrointestinal symptoms more noticeable. Comparisons between separate trials are imperfect because participants, doses and treatment goals differ.

Why are people stopping Wegovy? Reasons can include digestive symptoms, cost, insufficient response, pregnancy planning or a clinical decision that treatment is no longer suitable. Claims that around one in five people stop because of bad side effects do not match pooled STEP 1–3 data: 4.3% permanently discontinued semaglutide because of gastrointestinal adverse events. [9] Healthcare professionals can slow escalation, review diet and hydration, or discuss alternatives.

Who should be cautious?

Extra care is needed with a history of pancreatitis, severe gastroparesis, diabetic retinopathy, kidney or liver impairment, or medicines that can cause low blood sugar. Both products can very rarely be associated with an eye condition called NAION. [1, 2, 10, 11]

Seek urgent medical help for severe, persistent abdominal pain that may spread to the back, especially with vomiting, because this can indicate pancreatitis. [10] Sudden or rapidly worsening vision also requires urgent assessment. [11]

Drug interactions and contraindications

Do not use Wegovy or Ozempic if you are allergic to semaglutide or the product’s other ingredients. Wegovy should not be used during pregnancy and is not recommended while breastfeeding. Treatment should be stopped at least two months before a planned pregnancy. Ozempic is also not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding. [1, 2]

Because semaglutide delays stomach emptying, it may affect how quickly some oral medicines are absorbed. Particular care may be needed with medicines that require rapid gastrointestinal absorption. People taking warfarin or another coumarin anticoagulant may require more frequent INR monitoring when semaglutide is started. [1, 2]

Combining semaglutide with insulin or a sulfonylurea can increase the risk of hypoglycaemia. Do not take Wegovy and Ozempic together. Both deliver semaglutide, so overlapping them could amount to duplicate treatment and raise the risk of adverse effects.

Wegovy vs Ozempic cost in the UK

Prices vary depending on dose, provider, consultation fees and whether treatment is obtained privately or through the NHS. Costs can increase with a higher maintenance dose.

How much does Wegovy cost in the UK?

At Apomeds, the Wegovy cost checked on 31 July 2026 was £97.93 for four weeks at 0.25 mg, 0.5 mg or 1 mg, £161 at 1.7 mg and £218.73 at 2.4 mg. These prices include the medicine, delivery and platform fee but exclude a doctor’s fee where applicable. [12]

The price rises at 1.7 mg and again at the standard 2.4 mg maintenance dose. Before you buy Wegovy online, check exactly what the advertised price includes.

Is Ozempic available on the NHS?

Yes, Ozempic is available on the NHS for eligible adults with type 2 diabetes, not as a routine weight loss medication. In England, the standard NHS prescription charge is £9.90 per item unless an exemption applies. NHS prescriptions are free in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. [2, 13, 14, 15, 16]

People with diabetes mellitus that is not managed by diet alone may qualify for a medical exemption certificate in England, but the certificate must be valid before free prescriptions are claimed. [17] It is therefore inaccurate to say that NHS Ozempic is automatically free for every eligible patient throughout the UK.

Private Ozempic availability varies. Ozempic is licensed for type 2 diabetes rather than weight management, and the MHRA advises that GLP-1 medicines should be used within their approved indications. Anyone obtaining a private prescription should undergo an appropriate clinical assessment and have the medicine dispensed by an authorised source, such as a registered pharmacy. [18]

Supply shortages and availability

The major UK GLP-1 shortages that affected diabetes treatment from 2023 to early 2025 were reported as resolved by the end of January 2025. [19] Local pharmacy stock can still vary, and a particular strength may occasionally be unavailable.

Do not switch products, change dose or buy from an unregulated seller because of a supply problem. Ask the prescriber or pharmacist about a safe alternative.

Pros and cons of Wegovy and Ozempic

A man is considering his options

Wegovy and Ozempic offer meaningful benefits when used for the conditions for which they are prescribed, but neither is risk-free or right for everyone.

Wegovy: advantages and disadvantages

Advantages

  • Licensed weight loss medication for eligible adults and some adolescents
  • Strong average weight loss results in major trials
  • Weekly dosing and a structured treatment plan
  • Can reduce cardiovascular risk in some adults with established cardiovascular disease
  • Supports long-term weight management when combined with sustainable routines

Disadvantages

  • Digestive side effects are common, especially during dose escalation
  • Private treatment can become expensive at higher doses
  • NHS access is restricted
  • Weight can return after treatment stops
  • It does not replace nutrition, activity and other behaviour changes

Ozempic: advantages and disadvantages

Advantages

  • Licensed to improve diabetes outcomes and glucose control
  • Weekly injection with a lower maximum dose than Wegovy
  • Can reduce body weight as an additional benefit
  • Clinical trials cited in the product information have demonstrated cardiovascular benefits and, in selected patients with type 2 diabetes and chronic kidney disease, kidney benefits [2]

Disadvantages

  • Not licensed as a weight loss medication
  • Off-label use for managing weight may not be offered by regulated services
  • Digestive side effects and rare serious risks still occur
  • Weight loss is generally less than in dedicated Wegovy obesity trials

Which should you choose for managing weight: Wegovy or Ozempic?

For someone without type 2 diabetes who qualifies for drug treatment, Wegovy is usually the relevant semaglutide option because it is licensed to support weight loss. Ozempic is primarily for diabetes management, even though people may lose weight while taking it. [1, 2, 4]

For someone with type 2 diabetes, the choice is more individual. Blood sugar control, weight management, cardiovascular risk, current treatment and the person's health priorities all matter. A prescriber should choose Wegovy or Ozempic rather than treating them as interchangeable.

Alternatives to Wegovy and Ozempic for weight management

Other weight loss drugs, weight loss injections and oral medicines may be considered. Mounjaro contains tirzepatide, an active ingredient that works on both GIP and GLP-1 receptors. [20]

Why is Mounjaro better than Wegovy? It is not better for every person, but it produced greater average weight loss in the head-to-head SURMOUNT-5 trial: 20.2% with tirzepatide compared with 13.7% with semaglutide after 72 weeks. [21]

The earlier SURMOUNT-1 trial also found weight reductions of up to 22.5% with tirzepatide under an efficacy analysis; 89% of participants receiving 5 mg and 96% receiving 10 mg or 15 mg lost at least 5% of body weight. [22] These results came from a different trial and should not be directly compared with Wegovy figures without considering the study design. Suitability, side effects, cost and medical history still determine the better choice.

Other options include liraglutide injections, orlistat, Mysimba and structured lifestyle or bariatric services. The most appropriate weight loss treatment depends on eligibility and clinical assessment.

Frequently asked questions about Wegovy vs Ozempic

Here are answers to some common questions about switching between Wegovy and Ozempic, taking them together and what happens after treatment stops.

Can you switch between Ozempic and Wegovy?

A supervised switch may be possible, particularly when treatment goals change, but there is no universal dose conversion. A clinician should review the current dose, blood sugar, side effects and reason for switching. Do not overlap injections or decide the new starting dose yourself.

Can you take Wegovy and Ozempic together?

No. Wegovy and Ozempic contain semaglutide and should not be combined. Taking both would expose you to duplicate active ingredient semaglutide and could increase side effects without providing a proven extra benefit. [1, 2]

Is Wegovy stronger than Ozempic?

Wegovy reaches a higher licensed dose for weight management. Its standard 2.4 mg dose is above Ozempic’s 2 mg maximum dose, and eligible adults with obesity may be prescribed 7.2 mg Wegovy. [1, 2]

“Stronger” does not mean universally better. The brands have different licences and goals: Wegovy for weight management and Ozempic for diabetes management.

Will I regain weight if I stop taking either medication?

Weight regain can occur after either medicine is stopped, although the amount varies. In the STEP 1 extension, people who had received semaglutide 2.4 mg for obesity regained approximately two-thirds of their previous weight loss during the year after treatment ended. [23]

That result relates specifically to Wegovy-dose semaglutide and should not be treated as a precise prediction for every person stopping Ozempic. Continuing healthy lifestyle measures may reduce weight regain, although they may not completely prevent it. Discuss a longer-term weight-management plan before stopping either medication.

Does Wegovy or Ozempic affect mental health?

The European Medicines Agency concluded that the available evidence did not support a causal association between GLP-1 receptor agonists and suicidal or self-injurious thoughts. [24]

Mood changes should still be taken seriously. Seek prompt help for new or worsening depression, suicidal thoughts or major behavioural changes.
